Random Shots

I love taking pictures and what a better way of telling some stories is by posting some pictures. These were some of the shots I've taken from the places I've gone to or sometimes while in transit.

Meet The Duck Duck

Regular 2-seater duck duck for anyone who wants to level up their romance (hehe).
There's also rides for groups (4 persons).
The duck ducks are leisurely boats docked alongside of the river. I guess you can say that these are already part of "traditional" Korean scenery. They can be found in almost all parts of Daegu as well where in South Korea. They are environment friendly (I think... I've yet to try riding one of these babies myself lol) and affordable.

I call this.. "The Royal Ride." Isn't it cute?

Starbucks move out: Coffee shops abound in SK

The length of my stay here confirms my observation that Koreans truly love their coffee. They don't limit themselves with just one shop like the (infamous) Starbucks. There's Holly's Coffee, Sleepless in Seattle (yes, like the picture above), Da Vinci Coffee, Coffee and Waffle (which is pretty much everywhere) and more (some in Konglish or movie namesakes). All shops have standard menu like expresso, Americano, latte etc. Their taste are.. quite the same and at par with Starbucks (if not more). If you ever have a hankering for some joes and cakes, limit yourself no more with Starbucks unless you want to get a 'free' planner.

Pray here.. or there.

I came across with these two women in one of my early morning walks by the river. They were caught up with praying and chanting.. unfazed by odd stares (mostly coming from me lol). The woman on the left lit some candles and led the prayers. They then placed their offerings (mostly fruits and soju) beside a gaped portion of the ramp. I've no idea if what's in that area. Maybe that's where their loved ones perished.. or it could be part of their tradition.

Four is their Thirteenth

Elevator buttons
Something is missing in this picture? Yes. You are right. Most Koreans living in villas (mid rise buildings) consider the number a bad luck. Thus, they skip the number as shown in the picture.

more to come....

Photo Blog 10: Beauty in Randomness

Happy Birthday Omma.

The stillness of day..
with random cold chills in sight..
harks the question
could this still be one of the delights.

Random little things..
no meanings..just things..
Bashed.. threw.. just little things.. petty things..
especially in this stillness of day..

Yet.. what goes yonder..
is simple beauty
in all of all its magnanimity..
These little things..these little things

Hardened and toughened
molded and crafted
with random cold chills
 replied to that query
 at one sight.

Who said the world upside down is bad?

Weeping building.

She stands out.

Photo Blog #7:A quick escape from the city

Moi and our dear friend, Sunny at Unam Lake, Chilgok
Living in the city for some months now is quite tiring indeed. Fortunately, Daegu is practically embraced and neighbored with numerous mountains and lakes. These are quick escape from the literally hot (summer season) city. Our friend Sunny, as always, graciously brought us to one of a popular destinations in Chilgok (a neighboring town from ours) called Unam Lake.

There are a number of ways to get to Unam Lake (but I have to ask Sunny though). We went there by car right from the restaurant where we had our sumptuous lunch. It was quite an adventure though, I have to say. One of the entrance ways to Unam Lake was off the main road and the road itself towards the lake was so narrow and pretty much beat up. Sunny had to drive real slow lest she scathe her car.

Mini amphitheater
It was however late in the day when we got there and the sun was just lashing its tremendous sweltering heat. We walked towards the amphitheater fronting the lake. There was a little bit of shade near the stage but they were good enough to ward off the heat.

The lake, Sunny explained, was a natural made environment. A lot of people, young and old come to this area to relax. The trees, especially along the slopes of the neighboring mountain become even more majestic when spring or autumn comes.

Photo Express

Visitors can walk along the board walk or way towards the food of the mountain. The lake itself is patted on the surface with water grasses (for lack of a better term to describe them)and lotuses.

Dancing water (fountains lol) shot up in the air and spews the living flying organism with gentle taps on their wings.

Opposite of the lake is the mini amphitheater and far beyond benches shaded by the trees for everyone. You wouldn't have to worry about food and refreshment as the park has numerous mini food and refreshment stalls.

Us donning a Korean look. ^^

Finally relented our fingers do peace signs.

The pigeons love to stay as well away from the sun.

Captured moment with the love of my life. (kilig kilig)

and this is how it looks like without us in the way.

We finally went to a hut which was at the foot of the hill.
The adjumas didn't seem to mind us barging in.

Us in a playful mode.

My take of the lake.

Staying cool in the hut.
Hubby and moi with a beautiful background. Thanks Unam Lake.

In the not so distant reverie...
is a wonderful nature for you and me.
dragon flies dance.. the lotuses bloom..
visitors entranced..
to that not so distant reverie.

Photo Blog #6: Birds of the same feather

The Lone Pigeon pondered..
' should I or not.. perch on the railing
I live near the  river.
The river is nice and clean.
Nestled on both sides are huge arrays of farm lands,
with walk and bike ways for you and me.

Everyday birds comes by, hither tither

to see not only Mr. River.
Perched on the railings,
some wading through the water,
they await.. yes, await
for me or you
to take their picture. ^^

Mr. Lone Pigeon counted clockwise and what not.. but finally mustered itself up
and marched towards the barrier.

Noticing the attempt.. lil birdies huddled much closer to each other

but finally relented..and waited for the big birdie to join the group.

Meanwhile.. Mama Duck and Papa Duck lead their young ones through the water

leaving their eldest daughter behind with a haughty suitor

perhaps..so that they could discuss a brighter future?

Photo Blog #5: Heavenly Food in Chilgok

We love food, in great quantities or small, new and not. We can't let the chance slip through our fingers without trying even some of the local best dishes as well. The opportune moment knocked at our door step when our good friend Sunny took us to one of the Korean restaurants. Unfortunately, I didn't get the name of the shop. But it was located in a small up hill beside the main road in Chilgok. It's location is not that hard to miss either (provided you could read the Hangul lettering hanging just above the shop's door).

So what did we eat? Sunny took the lead in ordering our food for lunch.

For starters, chicken and cabbage salad with vegetables on the side. It was absolutely good and tasty!

Sunny and I taking a pose :D
The resto has several expandable rooms and you can eat there together with your friends in privacy. There's no chair by the way so you'll need to practice sitting on the floor instead (with your legs tucked under the table or folded).

Glass noodles with peppers, mushrooms and some seasoning. The look as well as the taste reminded me of our own pancit in the Philippines.

Our starters were soon joined by fried vegetables (eggplant, potato, green chilli ..yes green chilli and squash) with its dipping vinegar sauce.

And these were quickly followed by a whole array of side dishes.. a good prep for our main dish.

Pickled egg plant on the left and steamed green chilli in coconut I think

The bright red dish in a white plate is the infamous kimchi which is almost a requisite to all kinds of dishes.

I sort of giggled when I saw this was also served. Yes... dilis (anchovy) glazed with light vinegar and bell peppers. Yummy!!

We were each given a bowl of steamed rice (which was a whole lot better than Jasmine I say), a clear cold bean sprout soup.

And the main dish was served!! Woohooo!!Sunny called it "Black Fish" stew served in an overwhelmingly huge platter. It had potatoes, chilli, chives, chilli.. did I say chilli? Yes, you can pretty much guess that the dish was strikingly hot in color as well in flavor (and I meant that in a very good way). The black fish, which is the English name for it, is huge! Very big and has tons of tender, really tender and melts in your mouth kind of meat. I must confess that I hardly eat any fish but I can eat this dish everyday!

Hubby serves up our friend with a spoonful of black fish meat.
This is how the meat looks like up close. It's very soft and tender, but not so much that it falls apart kind of way. It has a sort of sweet nice taste to it despite the strong chilli hovering over the taste buds.

Our desert were quite simple but very nice nonetheless. The photo above is a sweet soft dough cookie I think and the other (sorry, no photo) was a cloudy rice drink (like our 'am' with a little bit of sugar). Not bad. Not bad at all.

It cost us about 45k won (and you may say it was quite pricey) but really, it is worth every penny.
